To make yourself less of a target:

don't talk smack if you cant back it up!
dont take resourse fields if you cant back it up!
keep lots a stone in your city...at least 50k!
keep little resourses there!

why have 6mil in lumber? when you can have troops quoed? think about it

and always, always keep gate open, "Rather die fighting then die hungry!"
if gates are closed your easy picking for food n other resourses!
